A unit converter is a tool that changes a measurement from one unit to another within the same physical quantity — for example, turning meters into feet, kilograms into pounds, or Celsius into Fahrenheit. Every conversion relies on a fixed mathematical relationship between the units, so the result is exact (or, for a few calendar-based units, a close average).
Most conversions use a base unit as a common reference. Each unit has a factor that links it to the base: to convert, the tool multiplies your value by the “from” factor and divides by the “to” factor. Temperature is the exception, because the Celsius, Fahrenheit and Kelvin scales have different zero points, so the converter applies an offset formula instead of a simple multiplier.
The metric system is built on powers of ten, which makes conversions especially simple — 1 kilometer is 1,000 meters, 1 kilogram is 1,000 grams, and 1 liter is 1,000 milliliters. Metric units are used in almost every country and in science, engineering and medicine.
Imperial and US customary units — feet, miles, pounds, gallons, Fahrenheit — are older systems still used mainly in the United States and, to a lesser extent, the United Kingdom. Because they do not follow a single base, each unit needs its own conversion factor (for example, 1 mile = 1,609.344 meters).
Length measures distance. Common pairs include 1 kilometer = 0.621371 miles, 1 meter = 3.28084 feet and 1 inch = 2.54 centimeters. Whether you are reading a recipe, planning a route or sizing a room, length conversion bridges metric and imperial distances.
Weight and mass tell you how heavy something is. Useful references include 1 kilogram = 2.20462 pounds, 1 pound = 453.592 grams and 1 ounce = 28.3495 grams. This is handy for cooking, shipping, fitness and science.
Temperature uses offset formulas rather than a single multiplier. To convert Celsius to Fahrenheit, use °F = °C × 9/5 + 32; to convert Fahrenheit to Celsius, use °C = (°F − 32) × 5/9; and to convert Celsius to Kelvin, add 273.15. So 0°C = 32°F and 100°C = 212°F.
Area measures a two-dimensional surface (1 hectare = 10,000 square meters; 1 acre = 4,046.86 square meters), while volume measures three-dimensional space (1 liter = 1,000 milliliters; 1 US gallon = 3.78541 liters). These conversions are common in real estate, agriculture, cooking and manufacturing.
Time conversions are exact for fixed units — 1 hour = 60 minutes, 1 day = 24 hours, 1 week = 7 days. Months and years, however, vary in length, so this tool uses average durations.
Speed measures distance over time. Common references include 1 kilometer/hour = 0.621371 miles/hour, 100 km/h = 62.1371 mph and 1 meter/second = 3.6 km/h. Speed conversion is useful for driving, aviation, sailing and sports.
