A car loan calculator is a free tool that estimates the monthly instalment and total cost of a car loan based on the car you want to buy and the terms you choose. This car loan EMI calculator uses the standard reducing-balance method. Each EMI is split into an interest portion charged on the outstanding balance and a principal portion that reduces the balance. Although the EMI stays fixed for the whole tenure, the split changes every month — early on most of each EMI is interest, while toward the end almost all of it is principal. To calculate car loan EMI, the calculator applies EMI = P × r × (1+r)n ÷ ((1+r)n − 1), where P is the loan amount, r is the monthly interest rate and n is the number of months.
The loan amount is the car price minus the down payment you pay upfront (and any exchange value). A larger down payment reduces the amount you need to borrow, which lowers your monthly EMI and the total interest over the tenure. The exchange value is subtracted from the car price along with your down payment, so it directly shrinks the loan amount. A higher exchange value means a smaller loan, a lower EMI and less total interest — and your initial contribution (down payment + exchange value) grows, reducing the portion you finance.
The interest rate is the lender's charge for lending you the money, expressed as a percentage per year. Even a small change in the rate has a noticeable effect over a multi-year car loan. A higher rate raises both your monthly EMI and the total interest, while a lower rate reduces them.
