What is a GST invoice?

A GST invoice (also called a tax invoice) is a commercial document issued by a registered supplier when supplying goods or services. A valid GST bill must show the seller's and buyer's GSTIN, invoice number and date, HSN/SAC codes, the taxable value of each item, the rate and amount of GST (CGST + SGST or IGST), and the total amount payable.

How to create a GST invoice

  • Enter your business/seller name, address and GSTIN.
  • Add the customer's name, billing address and GSTIN.
  • Set the invoice number, date, due date and place of supply.
  • Pick a tax mode: CGST + SGST (intra-state), IGST (inter-state) or No GST.
  • Add each item with HSN/SAC, quantity, unit, rate, discount % and GST %.
  • Review the auto-calculated totals and amount in words.
  • Click Print Invoice and choose Save as PDF.

GST invoice calculation

For every item the tool computes: Gross = Quantity × Rate, Discount = Gross × Discount%, Taxable Amount = Gross − Discount, GST = Taxable Amount × GST%, and Item Total = Taxable Amount + GST. GST is always calculated on the discounted (taxable) value, never on the original gross amount.

CGST and SGST

When the supplier and the buyer are in the same state (intra-state supply), the GST is split equally into CGST (Central GST) and SGST (State GST) — each half of the total GST percentage.

IGST

When the supplier and the buyer are in different states (inter-state supply), the full GST is charged as IGST (Integrated GST).

HSN/SAC

HSN (Harmonised System of Nomenclature) codes classify goods and SAC (Services Accounting Code) codes classify services. Including the correct HSN/SAC on a GST invoice is a compliance requirement for registered taxpayers.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a GST invoice?

A GST invoice is a tax bill issued by a GST-registered supplier showing the supply of goods or services, the taxable value, HSN/SAC, and the CGST/SGST or IGST charged. It is the primary document for claiming input tax credit.

Who needs to issue a GST invoice?

Any business or individual registered under GST must issue a tax invoice for every taxable supply. The exact type and timing depend on the nature of supply (goods or services) and your turnover.

When should I use CGST+SGST vs IGST?

Use CGST + SGST when the supplier and buyer are in the same state (intra-state). Use IGST when they are in different states or union territories (inter-state). Use No GST for exempt or non-GST supplies.

Is discount applied before or after GST?

Discount is applied before GST. This tool calculates GST on the taxable value (Quantity × Rate − Discount), which is the correct method for GST invoices.

Is this GST invoice generator free?

Yes. It is completely free, runs entirely in your browser, and does not require sign-up. Nothing you type is uploaded anywhere.

How do I save the invoice as PDF?

Click Print Invoice, then in the print dialog choose Save as PDF as the destination. The print layout is clean and contains only the invoice.
